Kathryn Lightfoot, an eighth grader from Texas, recommends Dragonsdawn, by Anne McCaffery.
While Dragonsdawn was not the first book written in the Dragonriders of Pern series, it starts the series. Dragonsdawn takes place at a distant point in Earth’s future. The Earth has become overcrowded and so these brave colonists are setting out to Pern, a new planet. They’ll face treachery among their own crew and a deadly organism called Thread that threatens to eliminate all hope for survival.
Dragonsdawn is a great story of overcoming odds, and it’s a mix of fantasy and sci-fi that appeals to many. McCaffrey writes in such a way that makes every character a main character, no matter how small or meaningless their role. This is a book to read when you’re happy, or feeling down, or late at night when you can barely keep your eyes open. Also, this book has challenging vocabulary and a high enough interest level to keep even high school readers entertained.
