Nikhil Sampath, a seventh grader from Texas, recommends The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear, by Walter Moers.
This is a story about a bear and his exploits.
The said bear, titled Captain Bluebear, visits fantastic lands, meets new people, and has quite the adventure throughout this book.
Captain Bluebear was never born. In fact, he came from a walnut shell in the middle of the ocean. He was rescued by minipirates, thus starting his long, long adventure throughout the hobgoblin island, Professor Abdullah Nightingale’s nocturnal academy for nocturnomaths, an iron ship, an island of food, a sugar desert (NOT A SUGAR DESSERT), and lots more.
I won’t tell you too much about the book, because that would spoil the reading experience, but I will tell you why you want to read this book. After a few minutes of reading, you will start to notice that this isn’t just any book. It is a legend, so beautiful in its workings, that it deserves to be a classic work of art, not just book. You will notice that no matter how long you keep reading, something always changes, thus hooking you onto a zip line to the next part. In fact, the story never has a “boring” part to it. It is always as exciting as the previous one. If you have been looking for a great book, with a great story line to it, I would highly recommend the great tale of Captain Bluebear and his comrades.
If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, this is a great choice! The author, Walter Moers, has other books following the same style as Discworld. The series is called Zamonia.
Happy reading!
