Home of the Brave
Andrea Yu is a fifth grader in Florida.
We are all brave
In our very own way.
But it takes a lot of bravery
To come all this way.
To venture from Cuba,
Or China or Spain.
But now we all know
That it wasn’t in vain.
A Nation of Immigrants,
That’s what we are.
We all ventured here
From nations afar.
We all worked hard,
For the next generation
Because now this is truly
Our nation.
And even though
We are all different races,
You can see the same look
In all of our faces.
A look of hope
Always sparkling in our eyes,
Hope that someone
Will hear our cries.
At the age of 27
My Abuelo came.
He ventured from Cuba,
Alone the whole way.
It all began
When he was 19,
On July 26,
1953.
The Cuban Revolution
Had begun.
And back then,
He was still quite young.
He worked with the government.
He helped them out.
But in 1961,
He began having doubts.
So he chose
A different path.
He left Cuba
And went to Honduras.
He worked for an American
Tobacco company,
So that he could begin
Making some money.
While in Honduras,
He had kids and a wife.
They were always hoping
for a better life.
For their children,
To study, and to learn.
For them to stop
Being concerned.
So of course, they did
Just what they should have,
For their kids can now study
Geometry and math.
They can become lawyers,
And doctors too.
And that’s exactly
What they decided to do.
They are now doing
What their parents did for them.
And they’re doing it for us,
The next generation.
Yes, America is great
Because of freedom, and rights
But if it hadn’t been taken
We would never have had to fight
Immigrants know this
Very well.
And they will defend it
With every morsel.
Every morsel of their being,
All they’ve got
And you’d better believe it,
Because that’s a whole lot.
