One of the amazing things about literature is coming across a story or a poem that perfectly captures your own experience. It’s the amazing feeling of seeing something described in a way that makes you think, Hey, that’s how I feel, but I could never say it that well! Every avid reader knows the feeling—after all, it’s why we read.
But how do authors do it? By using words, of course! Talented authors are able to pick the perfect words to make the perfect observations, shedding new light on what you see and feel every day. Whether it’s a feeling, an experience, or part of the environment, good authors find the little details that you barely notice. Then they describe them well, which helps you pay attention to those things, and that leads you to whole new insights.
Think you can do that for your fellow TIPsters?
Give it a shot! Pick an experience that other TIPsters are probably familiar with; it can be anything—an event at school, a place near your house, something you do with your friends. Then write a poem about it. But don’t say what it is in the poem! Instead, submit your poem to our Hands On submission page. We’ll select a few to include in next month’s Navigator, then other TIPsters can read your work and guess what it’s about!
