These men and women chose to serve their country for freedom’s sake. Veterans had to leave their families behind. They also left their jobs, hobbies, and friends in order to serve. Their families also had to sacrifice. Many had to leave one or both parents, brothers, sisters, or children.
Being in the military requires intensive training. Veterans push themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually to be able to serve. Their bodies may become broken, but they will never lose the spirit of American pride. Veterans come home with scars. They may lose a limb, or be emotionally scarred. Wars leave behind them empty shells.
Some veterans never made it home. They ended up making the ultimate sacrifice in line of duty. They gave their lives so that we remain free. A veteran is truly a hero. They deserve our respect and honor for a job well done.
Note: My Poppa and my great-granddaddy were both veterans. I am very proud of them and so lucky to live in the United States of America. I wrote this essay a few months ago to honor all veterans and our military.
