A mantra I always repeat to my students is “think and act like a filmmaker.” My evolution as a professional filmmaker has led me to make major changes to how I teach.
About Michael Salerno
Michael Salerno is an independent filmmaker from Durham, North Carolina. He and his wife, Cindy, own a production company, Artauro Productions, where they create educational, narrative, and documentary media. In 2015, they produced a documentary feature, Vinyl Dinosaurs. Michael has a Bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University in English Education. In addition to being a filmmaker, he was formerly a high school teacher where he taught English, Mass Communication, Film Study, and created the first documentary video production course. He also taught a documentary film summer camp for high school students called School of Doc sponsored by The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. Michael has worked with Duke TIP as an eStudies instructor as well as producing video content for several Duke TIP courses available at the TIP Curriculum Vault, including Creative Writing: Adventures Through Time; Architecture: Discover, Dream, Design; and Discovering Science and Medicine: Disease, Outbreak, and Epidemiology. He loves using film and video to communicate, educate and inspire through storytelling.
