For gifted students grades 8-10
In this literature study course students explore reading skills—the eight stages introduced in The Reader’s Journey, Volume 1—at an advanced level of understanding while traveling the world of literature. Latin America, India, the Middle East, and Africa are all stops on the world tour of compelling narratives, including novels, essays, poetry, drama, and short stories. Advanced-level reading questions and in-depth study of literary terms such as satire, tone, and figurative language focus each unit. Students are also encouraged to pursue open-ended literary analysis projects, harness web tools such as Twitter, and use a variety of other innovative means of making sense of literature. Final assessments require intensive essay writing where students synthesize understandings as “global citizens,” walking in the shoes of various cultures and characters.
